Silk Caye, Belize
Silk Caye Snorkling with the Turtles & Rays
Today's sea was kind to us... not smooth as glass but certainly not the pounding we took on Tuesday. We were picked up at our dock in front of our Casas @ 9:30am and we reached Silk Caye (22 miles of the coast) 7 minutes later. The island isn't any bigger than a drip of water... Ten (10) long strides gets you from the leeward side to the windward side of the island. The length maybe 50 ft.
There were plenty of boats and snorklers already enjoying the sights so we quickly joined in. It took us about 45 minutes to snorkle around the entire perimeter of Silk Caye. We then came ashore and had a wonderful lunch of BBQ Chicken, Fish and the infamous Mayo/Cheezwiz scallop potatoes.
After Lunch we gathered up our gear and Ewan (our skipper) took us out to where the locals were spear fishing for Conch and fish. When they clean their catch of the day the toss the remains overboard and it attracts the stingrays and turtles. Within minutes of us getting in the water we had the rays dancing around us and the turtle with his entourage of fish (about 15) gracefully cruising our group. We spent about 30 minutes following the turtle as he would dive to nibble on the ocean floor then surface for air and back down again.
A Sight to behold ! What a great way to end our time here in Belize !
We got home about 4pm and are headed out to our farewell dinner @ Wendy's (no, not the hamburger joint !). Ten (10) of us plus two (2) kiddlin's will venture downtown one more time and enjoy a good meal and share memories of our time in Belize.
We all have different schedules departing Belize so tomorrow will be a whirlwind I am sure so won't get to the blog until Sunday to wrap it up. I've enjoyed sharing our trip with everyone and hope you've enjoyed the trip too.
I'm adding more text to the 1st blog for 2/24 to review our dinner last night and add some photos so don't forget to go back sometime to catch up
